salt n health riskA review found that the relationship with stroke and cardiovascular disease would argue for a reduction for the entire population. It is known that eating too much salt puts people at increased risk for high blood pressure. Now it is confirmed a corollary: high salt intake also involves a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

A review published in the online edition of November 25, the BMJ found that a difference of just five grams daily salt intake leads to a difference of 23 percent in the rate of stroke and 17 percent in rate of cardiovascular disease.

According to the review, the World Health Organization recommends that people consume only five grams (about one teaspoon) of salt a day. But in the West, people usually eat ten grams a day, and Eastern Europe consume more.

The review authors analyzed thirteen studies involving more than 170,000 people, and evaluating the relationship between salt, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The researchers calculated that reducing daily salt intake of five grams around the world save more than a million deaths from stroke and nearly three million deaths from cardiovascular disease each year. And because salt intake measure is so difficult, the numbers may be even greater, the authors noted. [image by timeinc.net]
