fish n diabetesFish for dinner a couple of days per week helps reduce the risk of developing heart disease but not diabetes. The results of a study by a team of doctors from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that eating two or more servings of fish per week would increase slightly the risk of diabetes.

Diet is a key factor in preventing the onset of diabetes in adults, but it is unknown how the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids increases the risk of developing the disease, explains to Dr. Frank B. Hu.

The team analyzed the relationship between fish consumption and omega-3 and the onset of diabetes in 152 700 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study and 42,504 men participating in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. A total of 9380 health professionals developed diabetes at 18 years of study.

After controlling for lifestyle and other factors associated with feeding, more body weight, family history of diabetes, as well as the menopause or hormone use, if applicable, the team found an increased risk of developing diabetes “in all cohorts” who consumed the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

The diabetes was 1.17 times more common in people who ate fish 2 to 4 times a week, and 1.22 times higher in those who did five or more times per week, compared with those who ate the least amount of fish .

The authors noted that many studies have so far shown the benefits of fish and omega-3 fatty acids on several risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease, which is the main consequence of diabetes.

Experts say more research is needed to explain the “clinical significance” of the results and determine the mechanisms behind the observation that high consumption of fish increases the risk of developing the disease. [photo by organicfacts]
