Anshe Allen Intermountain Medical Center is a 1.2 million sq.-ft flagship medical center that comprises five centers of Excellence, women’s and newborns, tertiary trauma, heart and lung, ambulatory care, and oncology. The client wanted a unified campus that recognized the distinct identities of each Center of Excellence while embracing a common identity that reinforced the brand of intermountain Healthcare. Where direct access is not desireable, as in the diagnostic and treatment area, view corridors from the main pathways to maximize exposure to light and connectivity to nature with views of the mountains, landscaped terrain, and healing gardens, engaging visitors and staff in the passing of time and seasons.
The design team organized the five components along a central concourse and linked them through public spaces. As a result, the design creates an intimate, human scaled environment that makes a large hospital accessible and lends personal approach to healthcare to patients and their families, offering private spaces for retreat and introspection and social spaces to foster community and connection.
The design team adopted the north south axis of the munitions plant while transforming the superfund site into a place of healing, openness, and rebirth.
At one time, a WWII munitions plant occupied the site, its smoke stacks rising against the mountains. It was a land-mark in the area but also a reminder of national security and human destruction.
The soil was contaminated with arsenic and lead so to ensure that construction would not exacerbate the toxicity level, the site was capped off, providing a permanent barrier between the facility and the ground underneath. Taken from Health Care Design Magazine
